Location: Mclean Black Box Room 417

Mass surveillance can be a threat to creativity. But creativity can also become a threat to surveillance. In this presentation Adam Harvey will discuss the research and motivation behind several projects that explore how art can be used to subvert mass surveillance.

Harvey develops art at the intersection of fashion, design, and privacy. He creates speculative yet functional countersurveillance experiments that undermine sophisticated surveillance systems including a style of camouflage to thwart face detection and a line of Islamic inspired clothing to shield against aerial surveillance from military drones. Harvey’s work has been shown in range of publications from the Military Times to the New York Times. He currently works at NEW INC where he runs the Privacy Gift Shop, an online boutique for countersurveillance art and privacy accessories.
